Montgomery County artist, Lida Stifel and her daughter, Torrey Stifel Kist of Savannah, GA. will be exhibiting their paintings at Orchard Gallery in Bethesda from May 13 through June 2, 2011. There will be an opening reception on Friday, May 13 from 6-8:30, which will coincide with the Bethesda Art Walk. Gallery Hours are 10:30am - 7:30pm Monday through Saturday. The title of the Show is Patterns/Changes/ Movement.

Lida Stifel, whose work involves the human figure, experiments with various mediums and techniques including oil on canvas, collage and mixed media on mylar. Her work balances reverie with reality. While forging new territories of discovery, she shows her roots in tradition. Stifel has received numerous awards for her paintings and has taught figure painting at the Yellow Barn Studio at Glen Echo for 16 years.

Torrey Kist received her MFA form Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. Her work was published in edition #64 of New American Paintings in 2005. Kist’s loosely painted surfaces juxtaposed with controlled shapes suggest her interest in social issues and the human condition by emphasizing the visual tension between the deliberate and chance. How form and color informs content is a major theme for both artists.

This will be the 4th exhibition at Orchard Gallery for Stifel and the 2nd for Kist. The show will partner with the non- profit foundation Baby Love DC, which helps families in need in the Washington Metropolitan area.
